The Arts
The Middle Gray seeks the coexistence of all kinds of arts under one roof. We strive to contribute to the advancement of the art community and cultural scene in Brookline and the Boston area while supporting the growth of young, promising local artists. It is also important for us to build a place that promotes accessibility to the arts and art education. By creating a multidisciplinary art space we intend to provide more options for artists and art consumers, which we hope will help forge a stronger community.

Monique Boutin
Painting: Monique Boutin’s work comes from an exploration, especially as a distance runner, into phenomenology and the way we relate to our environments, the world around us, and “nature,” as humans, and how our experiences of place can come to define us.

Alejandra Cruz
Sculpture: This work stands as a physical representation of the heaviness and pain that "identities" cause to the encumbered body.
Jewelry: These pieces were created to celebrate women’s diversity in every sense and break our distorted and narrow perception of beauty.

Yoonjoo Kim:
iPhone Photography: The artist captures her surroundings using an iPhone, the gadget that has become the center of this convenient but hectic world. Kim utilizes this trapping technology to regain control, and she transforms her intrusive fast paced device into an artistic tool.

Catalina Piedrahita
Mixed Media: Piedrahita captures quotidian images documenting them as a world now between the digital and the analog. She attempts to restore - and show the viewer - order amongst the chaos of our newly hyper-technological lives by giving these beautiful instances permanent physical space and gravity.

Music/Sound Design: This body of work intends to induce a meditative state. It seeks to create an atmosphere rich with meaning and purpose, while avoiding an explicit emotional direction, so that the spectator may project freely project themselves onto the work.

Past Exhibitions
Local potter, Sharrel Paul, will be exhibiting and selling "EarthScapes," an exclusive line of ceramic pieces at The Middle Gray from September 10th until November 27th.
Show Opening:
Sept. 10th, 7p-9p with live music by Tracy Clark
Food & drinks will be available for purchase. Support the arts!
About the show:
Sharrel created “EarthScapes” after a road trip out to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Having always loved the gentle hills of New England, she wanted to create a theme throughout her pots that reflected that. The carved lines represent those hills and valleys. The glazes that she chose to use all have an "earthy" undertone: blue for the sky, green for the lush leaves, gray for the granite stone, and a vibrant brown for the soil. Her hope is to create a sense of calm and connectivity back to nature with both the ceramics as well as the cozy crocheted pieces.
From the artist:
"I was born and raised here in Massachusetts, but lived and loved for a bit in California. I moved back to Boston in 2013 when I was faced with a cancer battle. While going through treatment, I started in a ceramics class as a way of escaping the medical stress. Little did I know that I would turn my new love for clay and my old love of crochet into a small business. Currently, I have a successful Etsy shop and Instagram feed and participate at local markets as well as the bi-annual pottery sale and show at Feet of Clay Pottery in Brookline."

Pressed Leaves by Katie Higgins-White
The processes of printmaking, collage, and bookbinding offers the perfect canvases for exploring the changes effected by time, growth, and maturation – factors that impact human beings, the natural world, and, ultimately, our entire planet.
Cysters by Nina Berinstein
Clay is natural, seamless, touched by what surrounds it. It does not resist. It is impressionable. I come at clay with all of myself and learn by stepping back to see the impressions I leave. I make to understand; to wring meaning and create awareness.
With live music by Sophie Marcq: Sophie Maricq is a multi cultural singer-songwriter who believes that music is one of the most powerful tools to contribute to dialogue and positive change. She is accompanied by a unique multi cultural band with Jussi Reijonen (Finland) on guitar, Pablo Yescas (Mexico) on bass and Fabio Pirozzolo (Italy) on percussion. How do you represent an intangible, non-representational idea? How do you evoke the constant flux, the ever-progressing change of life in a fixed, still image?
With a range of techniques, mediums and styles, these four artists begin to explore these ideas and questions, more often than not with little expectation of an answer. There are visual and conceptual threads that connect one to the next, initiating a conversation amongst their works, and with the viewer. They share a minimal language, an economy of visual information that leaves room for others’ thoughts, emotions.
From traditional silver gelatin images, crafted with a medium format camera, to digital images, appropriated imagery, layers of wax enveloping an image, or explorations of light itself, the range of methods shows the experimental nature of this group. Ideas of nature, of the spaces we inhabit, of how we see and understand, all dance from one image to the next.
